The wide 110° angle of view is complemented by an impressive +/- 11 mm travel range to compensate for unwanted converging lines and trapezoidal distortion. Displacement control is further complemented by a 360° rotation mechanism that applies movements in various directions to accommodate shooting in horizontal and vertical orientations. Also, as part of the Zero-D lens series, this 15 mm f/4.5 renders scenes with a high degree of precision and very low distortion.
In terms of optics, there are two aspherical and three ultra-low dispersion elements, which reduce spherical and chromatic aberrations for high sharpness and clarity. An anti-reflective coating also helps control flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color rendition. The lens uses a manual focus design to work with subjects at a distance of 7.9 and features a fourteen-blade aperture to produce subtle 14-point sun stars.
The R version (red ring) differs from its predecessor (blue ring) in the number of shutter blades, which are 14: on point lights the star effect thus has 14 points and is less defined and distracting than the standard version.
At the same time, the out-of-focus areas in the background create a pleasant bokeh effect.
